Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded their debut album in 1973, Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, and became notorious for their triple-guitar attack. The album showcased the hit single “Free Bird,” a tribute to the recently deceased Duane Allman. The single earned them national exposure and became one of the staples of rock music, still receiving plenty of airtime decades after its release.
The band has gone on to record 65 albums including platinum releases Second Helping (1974), Nutin’ Fancy (1975) and Street Survivors (1977), selling 30 million copies along the way.
Three days after the release of Street Survivors, the band was in a plane crash which took the lives of three of the original band members and seriously injured the rest. In 1987, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a full-scale tour with crash survivors Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle and former guitarist Ed King. Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, took over as the new lead singer and primary songwriter. The reconstituted Lynyrd Skynyrd has gone through several lineup changes but continues to record and tour today.
Ranked as one of the best-selling bands of all time by the Recording Industry Association of America and recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Lynyrd Skynyrd is still going strong with more than 80 performances annually. The Southern anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” has passed the 1,000,000 mark in downloaded master ring tones, proving that Lynyrd Skynyrd is a major industry icon that appeals to all generations.
Current members include Rossington (guitar), Powell (keyboards), Ean Evans (bass), Rickey Medlocke (guitar/drums), who played drums with Skynyrd for a short time in 1971, Johnny Van Zant (vocals) from Blackfoot and Michael Cartellone (drums). Dale Krantz and Carol Chase sing background vocals.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is part of the Belle Tire Concert Series.
