Dennis Edwards began singing at the age of seven and formed his own group, Dennis Edwards & the FireBalls, in 1961 before joining The Contours in 1966. He joined the male vocal group The Temptations as their lead singer in 1968, upon the departure of David Ruffin.

The Temptations enjoyed a long line of major hit singles throughout their career, beginning with the release of “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” Other hit singles include “My Girl,” “Beauty is Only Skin Deep,” “Cloud Nine,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

Edwards’ career has been highlighted by 14 gold albums, five Grammy Awards and seven Grammy nominations. The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Current members of The Temptations Revue include Edwards, Ali Woodson, Mike Pattillo, David Sea and Chris Arnold.

The Contours were one of the first groups signed to the Motown Record label. During their early recording career at Motown, The Contours consisted of Sylvester Potts, Billy Gordon, Billy Hoggs, Joe Billingslea and Hubert Johnson. The group’s biggest hit came in 1962 with “Do You Love Me,” a song originally intended for The Temptations. The single went straight to the top of the R&B charts in just a few short weeks and peaked at number three on Billboard’s Pop Singles chart.

The Contours were able to score a follow-up hit, “Shake Sherrie,” in 1963 and posted other singles such as “Can You Jerk Like Me?” and “The Day When She Needed Me.” By 1965, the original quintet was no longer intact, with only Sylvester Potts and Billy Gordon remaining of the original group. Subsequent years brought new members, including Joe Stubbs and Dennis Edwards, who later joined The Temptations.

In 1988, “Do You Love Me?” was revived thanks to the film Dirty Dancing and reached number 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Most recently, The Contours released the album A New Direction (2000).

Sylvester Potts still tours, keeping The Contours’ music alive. Additional members of The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts include Kim Green, Darrel Nunlee and Tony Womack.

The Legends of Motown The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards and The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts is part of the Belle Tire Concert Series.
