In addition, he holds 16 Gold and five Platinum albums for career sales approaching 15 million. In 1983, Smith released his debut solo album Michael W. Smith Project. The album featured the hit single, “Friends,” which was named the “Number One Song of All Time” in CCM Magazine. The album peaked at number three on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Christian Albums chart. He followed up with Michael W. Smith 2 (1984), which earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Male Gospel Performance. Smith’s latest release, A New Hallelujah (2008), was recorded live in Houston last summer before 12,000 people and features a 250-voice choir, The African Children’s Choir, and 2008 Grammy Award-winner Israel Houghton. Smith’s third worship album, it is his passion to bring the live worship experience back to the front of all his ministry. “I think this record is global, bigger than just a worship record in the West,” says Smith. “It was inspired by my travels around the world including visits to Europe, Israel and Africa. That’s why I incorporated a guest vocalist singing in Spanish, and we feature the African Children’s Choir. I’m kind of the cheerleader here. Let’s get with it! Let’s go! Let love reach to the other side!” Smith’s first worship album, simply titled Worship, was released on September 11, 2001 and has sold more than a million-and-a half copies. Its follow up, Worship Again, was released September 19, 2002, and is nearing the 800,000 mark. Michael W. Smith with special guests Natalie Grant and Phil Stacey is part of the Belle Tire Concert Series.
